Why I Created
Graceful Departures
I created Graceful Departures because I experienced first-hand how difficult it can be to organise a funeral while you are still trying to process the loss of someone you love.
Some experiences change the way you see the world.
There are some experiences in life that change the way you see the world.
For me, losing three members of my family was one of them.
Each time, I saw something that I believe many families experience but rarely talk about.
When someone dies, the grief is immediate. The shock is overwhelming. You want time to process what has happened, to be with your family, and to remember the person you have lost.
But almost immediately, you are expected to start organising a funeral.
“Why isn't there one place where a family can find most of what they need when they need it most?”
That question became the beginning of Graceful Departures.
Grief should not have to come with a second job.
When a loved one dies, families are suddenly faced with a long list of decisions, suppliers and arrangements — often while they are still processing the shock of the loss.
And suddenly, while you are grieving, you are also trying to become an event planner, procurement officer, fundraiser and logistics coordinator.
I experienced this personally.
Building a community
around families.
I envisioned a trusted platform where families could find funeral and memorial products and services in one place — while connecting them with professional and verified service providers.
Our vision is not simply to sell funeral packages.
It is to bring together a community.
A community of people and businesses who play a role when a family says goodbye to someone they love.
A national network built around dignity, trust and community.
Graceful Departures is still a new business. That means I want to be honest with you.
We are not yet in a position to solve every problem for every family in every part of Kenya.
We are working to build a network of service providers across all 47 counties, so that wherever a family finds itself, there is a greater possibility of finding someone they can trust nearby.
We are also preparing to launch our marketplace and expand the range of products and services families can discover through the platform.
And we have a bigger ambition: to develop fundraising capabilities that can help families mobilise support from relatives, friends, communities and loved ones both locally and abroad.
Help us build the community.
If you provide a product or service that can help a family during a funeral, memorial or bereavement journey, I want you to become part of Graceful Departures.
Create your vendor profile. List your products and services. Tell us where you operate. And become part of a growing national network that is trying to make one of life's most difficult experiences a little easier.
You are not simply joining a directory.
You are helping us build the community that I wish existed when my own family needed it.
Making difficult moments a little easier.
Our goal is simple:
To make funeral planning easier, more dignified and more compassionate — for every family, wherever they are.
I started Graceful Departures because I experienced the problem.
Now, I am inviting you to help me build the solution.
